Vaccine Passport
The idea of a Vaccine Passport has been discussed quite a bit lately. Several political leaders have challenged the legality and wisdom of implementing a vaccine passport in the community - especially in my home state of Texas. Nonetheless, I wanted to explore how a vaccine passport could function and solve a real problem: knowing who has been vaccinated and presents a reduced threat to public health. Also, it is probable that a vaccine passport will be implemented in some communities, therefore I think this is a worthwhile exercise.

Problem
Individuals need a way to demonstrate that they have received the Covid 19 vaccine to employers, businesses, travel providers and the community at large.
Proposed Solution
A passport that resides on a mobile app that provides proof of vaccination. The provider of the vaccine will activate the passport, ensuring safety and security. Businesses and community organizations can use the “scan” feature of the the app and receive confirmation the individual is vaccinated. Also, in case of an issue with the vaccine, the CDC can issue targeted alerts based on lot numbers to passport owners immediately on their mobile devices.
Process
I began this process by gathering generative feedback. I worked closely with a healthcare educator and vaccine provider to discuss logistics and plausibility of vaccine providers using mobile devices to activate a vaccine recipient’s passport. I discovered the process must be quick and easy and cannot slow down the overall pace of vaccinations. I chose to utilize QR codes because they have become ubiquitous during the pandemic and their use has been widely adopted.
User Flows

User Testing
I performed two rounds of user testing with five users each time. I made small tweaks to screens and processes along the way. Initially, the passport was separated into three different applications. After the first round of user teasing, users clearly suggested combining the passport into one app and allowing users to choose between functionality. Everyone will need the app as a recipient, and many will also need the app as a provider or in their business or organizational role. It was important to allow for users to switch easily between these roles.
The second round of user testing revealed breaks in the app and helped finalize the copy and font sizing.
